Requesting Corrections to the Draft BRIMR Dataset for FY2025
The deadline for submitting corrections is 5:00 PM Eastern time on Sunday 8 February 2026.
We ask that all requests for changes to BRIMR’s draft dataset be submitted using the format outlined below. Please use only the BRIMR draft file when preparing your requests, NOT the NIH Worldwide file, NIH RePORTER, or your own institutional spreadsheets. You can download the BRIMR draft and/or the Request Form by clicking these links:
At the top of the Request Form, you will see three hypothetical examples that illustrate the correct format for requesting changes such as:
- Reassigning an award from Biochemistry to Urology within a medical school; or
- Reassigning an award from a school of public health to a medical school; or
- Correcting the spelling of a PI’s name and reassigning the award from medical school to nursing school.
Please insert your own request(s) below these examples, using a pair of rows for each award. Multiple awards can be listed in any order on a single copy of the form. The row numbers on the left are irrelevant.
For each award for which you are requesting changes, please do the following:
- Copy the entire row for that award from BRIMR’s draft file, extending from column A through column W.
- Paste that entire row onto TWO successive rows of the request form.
- In the upper row, highlight in yellow the cell(s) for which you are requesting changes. The text should be black on a yellow background (see instructions here). Do not change any data in this upper row.
- In the lower row, make the correction(s) you are requesting. Do not highlight any cells in this lower row.
Repeat those steps to propose changes in any other award(s), adding a pair of rows for each award. It is helpful to leave one blank row after each new pair.
This format facilitates our review of a given award, since your highlights in the upper row identify the cell(s) in question and the lower row indicates your requested changes to those cells. Ideally, once approved, BRIMR can copy the entire lower row and paste it into our master file without further modification to implement those changes.
When finished, save a copy of the form on your computer, with a filename that identifies your institution as specifically as possible, e.g.:
- BRIMR Corrections for Acme School of Medicine Dept of Urology
- BRIMR Corrections for Acme School of Public Health
- BRIMR Correction for Acme School of Nursing PI O’Leary
Next, count up the number of awards for which you are requesting one or more changes, and then click the link below to pay the processing fee of $20 per award. We accept most major credit cards and common digital wallets.
You will receive an email confirming payment, at the email address you specify on the payment form. Be sure to save a copy to forward to us.
How to Highlight a Cell in the Change-Request Form
- The Form is an Excel spreadsheet that will open automatically in Excel
- Be sure the "Home" marker at upper right corner is underlined; if not, click "Home"
- The "Highlight" tool is a bucket icon with a downward arrowhead beside it.
- Clicking once on the arrowhead will open a panel of color options; choose yellow, then close the panel. A yellow strip should appear below the bucket icon.
- Click once anywhere inside the cell to be highlighted, then click once on the bucket icon; the text will remain black.
- To un-do a highlight, return to the color panel, choose "No Color", and close the panel; clicking once on a cell and then on the bucket icon will remove the highlighting.

Finally, submit your request via email to with your request file and your payment-confirmation receipt included as attachments. Please use the filename of your request form as the header of your email.
If you have questions or encounter problems with this process, please contact us at .
BRIMR aims to review each request within 3-5 days of receipt. We may ask you for additional information, notify you if any requested changes are not approved, or provide a revised excerpt from our master datafile incorporating any changes for your final review. No changes will appear in our posted draft form, so it is important that you receive a reply from us. If you have not heard back from us via email after 5 days, please contact us promptly by email again.
No new requests for changes can be accepted after the stated deadline of 5:00 PM Eastern time on Sunday 8 February 2026.
Important Considerations in Requesting Corrections
Please submit corrections using the format specified above. Before submitting them, please consult our recent publication that summarizes BRIMR’s ranking methodology, and keep the following principles in mind:
- The goal is to correct errors, not to alter or “game” the rankings. As a rule, grants should be credited to the primary home department, school, and institution of the single named principal investigator (PI) of the award as reported to NIH. BRIMR’s methodology conforms to NIH policy in most respects and strongly presumes the NIH Worldwide dataset is accurate.
- An award is listed only if funds were disbursed by NIH during the fiscal year. Hence multi-year awards show only the current-year’s funding, and “active” awards that received no new funds (such as no-cost extensions) do not appear at all. BRIMR never changes the dollar amount of an award and we do not add awards that aren’t listed in the NIH Worldwide file.
- Like NIH, BRIMR credits all funding for a given award to only one organization and one PI.
- We do not use information obtained from the NIH’s RePORTER search tool unless it is also listed in the NIH Worldwide file. Please do not cite RePORTER as the basis for requesting changes.
For each listed award, look carefully at six parameters that BRIMR uses for ranking purposes, namely:
Column A – ORGANIZATION NAME
Column D – FUNDING MECHANISM
Column F – PI NAME
Column J – NIH DEPT COMBINING NAME
Column K – NIH MC COMBINING NAME
Column N – FUNDING
We also rely on columns P, Q, and U when ranking cities, states, and Independent Hospitals, respectively.
Listings for awards designated as “R&D CONTRACTS” in column D often lack key information that BRIMR needs for its rankings. In the interest of fairness, we therefore omit R&D contracts from all our rankings of schools, departments, or PIs, though we do include them in rankings of organizations and also provide a list of them alphabetically by PI name. We treat all other funding mechanisms equally for ranking purposes. Changes for awards designated as R&D Contracts (in column D) should be limited to those affecting the PI’s name.
The “combining names” (columns J and K) are standardized categories assigned by NIH. BRIMR only ranks entities that are classified as Schools of Dentistry, Medicine, Nursing, Osteopathic Medicine, Pharmacy, Public Health, or Veterinary Medicine (in column K), or as Independent Hospitals in column U. We only rank departments (column J) in Schools of Medicine. PIs are ranked in comparison to others who received awards under the same department type (column J) in a medical school (column K), regardless of their individual training or specialty.
Please pay particular attention to awards for which any of the above columns is marked “NONE”, “UNAVAILABLE”, “UNIVERSITY-WIDE”, etc., or is simply blank. BRIMR cannot include these awards in most rankings unless the missing information is provided to us.
Requests for corrections must be received by the stated deadline. Early submission is encouraged. Revisions will be made after the deadline only when they result entirely from an error on BRIMR’s part. By submitting such a request, you waive any claim of confidentiality and authorize us to share it with others at our sole discretion. We regret that not all proposed changes may be implemented, and that none will be applied to prior years. No changes will be communicated by BRIMR to the NIH. If you spot an error, please check whether it is also present in the NIH’s Worldwide 2025 file; if so, your Institutional Signing Officer may contact NIH directly to correct it in future years as appropriate.
We are deeply grateful to all of the stakeholders whose careful attention to the source data each year helps us keep the BRIMR rankings as accurate, valid, and reliable as possible.
That which can be asserted without evidence can be dismissed without evidence.
The first principle is that you must not fool yourself. And you are the easiest person to fool.
Now is the time to understand more, so that we may fear less.
